It turns out my mother was abused as a kid and felt no one protected her.

The step-cousin had some bad habits so a few people questioned whether to believe her so I came forward as I had a better reputation behavior wise.

I didn't tell anyone since he said I was his special angel and how I'd get him in trouble and lose my favorite cousin if I did (he told me the cousin would go to an orphanage if I told anyone her Dad hurt me). I believed him.
